On the morning of the 14th, Mikkel and I arrived at camp. The time is half past 10 and even though we have not practiced at all, this has been a though day. I will spend this night in my room studying the playbook. Tomorrow we kick off.

Today we got settled in at the Hall especially assigned to the football team. 150 guys showed up, so just getting a room and meal plan toke hours. Shortly after dumping our stuff we went to the first team meeting. Everybody was there and so it gave me the first opportunity to access the competition.

My first response is ”DAMN, these guys are big – this is definitely not Denmark”. I only started lifting a year ago, so, needless to say, I feel like a boy amongst men. All the players at camp have received invitations and I can easily tell that they came to compete. At the Offensive team meeting a couple of hours later the head coach, Larry Terry, toke a moment to introduce both me and Mike to the rest of the team. The others players on the team seem really interested in hearing about football in Denmark, so I feel right at home already. At the O-meeting we were introduced to UWLAX philosophy regarding football. They play a spread offense, utilizing many receivers. When I talked to Coach Terry earlier this year has told me, that he wanted to bring in extra receivers to his team – I can see now that he ment it:
25 Wr's are here at camp competing to make the squad, but only 12 will make the final roster.
Since none of their receivers were seniors last year, we have 13 returnees including a couple of players who grey shirted last season. For those of you that do not know that term, it basically means that they have participated in camp as sophomores, but didn't make the team. Instead of burning their eligibility they sat a season out to work out and get ready for this camp. Anyways, now I know that I must beat 13 players to make that team. It is definitely not going to be easy, but I came to play too. The biggest difference here is that everybody has put in time in the gym.

After the team meeting, we went to the locker rooms to get issued equipment. I brought my own shoulderpads, which I am very happy about know. UWLAX has some cool gear, but when having to fit 150 players, they did have some problems finding fits for some players. I waited for two straight hours to finally get my own locker. Standing in line for that long gave me the opportunity to talk to some of the players and find out a little bit more about camp. Tomorrow all the new players will have individual practice for an hour before joining the rest of the team. Even though I am older than most of the sophomores and feel that I am competing against them and not the more seasoned players. I will tell you this: there are definitely some athletic freaks over here! Especially the unit of linebackers. This year UWLAX has brought in like 45 linebackers, and I can easily tell that some of the young guys are intimidated by that. There are also a couple of receivers bigger than most linebackers I have seen in Denmark. However, I have decided not to get intimidated and just play my chance. Let’s see if I can keep that promise.

Tomorrow is the first day of football practice. We will only be wearing helmets, but I am sure the session will help me form a better picture of the competition out here. I hope we will be practicing on their home field, Memorial Field. Going onto that field earlier today really motivated me. It seats about 4500 people, which might sound small, but believe me – just standing on that awesome turf field gave me a kick of energy. I can't believe I am finally here doing this – living out this dream.

I have to consult my new playbook now. They run a no-huddle system with a terrible amount of hand signals all new to me, so I will be focusing on that for the next couple of days.

I will get back to you guys with more on my stay at UWLAX tomorrow.
