So what's new.... EVERYTHING IS NEW. On Thursday the Head Coach, Larry Terry, approach me at practice and told me that I will be rejoining the team from Tuesday in this coming week. Words can't explain my excitement. In the words of my Towers Qb, JR, ”It's time to do work... and catch pills!”.
So what have I been up to...
Well, a key term for me has been ”no regrets” ever since I got here. When I was cut, I was told that I might still be invited back – Even though the chances seemed slim, I had to 'play' against the odds.
So I have been at every single practice, standing on the sideline and helping out with the Wrs whenever I could. The team has lifting Tuesday and Thursday from 5.30 in the morning before school. I have participated in these – every single time. Additionally, I went to see the Coach Terry to talk to him about the roster. For the first couple of weeks he didn't have much information to share with me though.
In the beginning of last week, I was having dinner with Jimmy Litscher, a 5-10, 240 lbs linebacker. Jimmy is an awesome dude, who has done a lot to make me feel at home over here. Jimmy was named team captain this year – an honor he truly deserves. At the dinner I talked to Jimmy about the team and how bad I still wanted to play. A couple of days later Jimmy griped hold of our starting quarterback and captain, Nick Anker, and together they went to talk to Coach Terry about having me back on the team. I believe their endorsement is the greatest one I have had – and now I am back. I have had a bunch of the players write me on facebook to let me know, that I have earned my way back on the team – and I believe that too.
The roster now consist of 96 players, 54 of these players made the travelling squad. That means that they will be playing the away games. UW La Crosse suits up all 96 players at home games. I am so excited about suiting up for my first game 9th of October. I won't see the field, but it is going to be a very big moment for me – Heck, I might even cry. My teammates from the Copenhagen Towers will be able to recognize that trade of mine.
In a few weeks, I will be playing in the Junior Varsity game. That is going to be exciting. Of course, I still think that I need to prove myself to the coaching staff. I would literally kill to have a catch in that game. To those of you who might not know what Junior Varsity, it is basically a team of all the young guys on the team, who aren't staring. In the JV-games, they get to prove themselves.
In other news, the team has played another two games. Both out of conference. Both they lost. The first one against Mary-Hardin Baylor, 16th ranked D3 team in the nation. This game was really close. We were up with 19-0 at half time, but lost 24-19. SS Philip Minja, my Swedish teammate, recorded 14 tackles in the game. Philp is Shujaa Bensons cousin, which I think is really funny – how small is the world!?
Yesterday the team played Missouri S&T on the road. Again, we lost. The final score was 31-24. The team lost after having a late 4th quarter lead - http://www.uwlathletics.com/news/2010/9/25/FB_0925101235.aspx
